Grievous Exigence

Sometimes a knife to the throat starts the gears of change.

Israel Montezinos cracked three eggs into his beer and returned to the bedroom archway. Two years without interaction, Endymion Dabria walked into his villa and shared his bed the evening before. Standing and watching Endymion gather his clothes, Israel knows he won’t be seeing him again. That’s how it is, how it’s been through their ten years together. With Endymion off to work, a package arrives. A can of hotdogs. Who would order a single can of hotdogs? With the question left on the kitchen table, Israel drives to the nearest supermarket to get a fresh six-pack and move onto the job given the day before. Get the paintings, get the money, and deliver them to the auction house. Easy. What isn’t easy? A knife pointed at his throat. Three late teens picking to entertain themselves with the wrong man. Twenty-four, a professional criminal, Israel pulls a gun on the knife-wielding eighteen-year-old. Smart? Not what the police decided. Lucky him, the two officers send him off after arresting the boy with the knife. With the comprise he’d bring the two others home. It helps to have friends. What didn’t help, Pierrick Everleigh, the shortest of the two in his car. His boss’s son. It would make the day’s work easier. Two young guys carrying the paintings, the money bags, and possible meat shields, Israel took them on. Sometimes a knife to the throat is all it takes to start the gears of change. What a day, and what a day to give someone’s life the needed shift. Israel will get what he needs to get what he wants, even if he doesn’t know it, doesn’t want to admit it. Maybe he doesn’t need to admit it?
